The Protected

He is a beastly cancer, channeling
his cruelty to all that come in contact
with him. New employees are infuriated;
they try to speak up about him. No use.
He will never leave of is own accord,
for within the tree of the firm,
a strong branch shields him. No one knows
who or why. With beady eyes that release
rays of hatred, he lies to your face, cheats
you of what is rightfully yours. Before you
can take action, he will chew you up
and spit you out. Do not take this job.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  1. If only we had a mirror that could reflect tomorrow’s response to the decisions of today. If only all places with such people came with warnings like this. May his strong branch break. 😉 Well done, Sara!
