Words:  sigh, arrival, alone, scar, pale, plain, stray, ingest, laughing, chime, silent, holy

Plainly garbed, pale and alone,
a man with scarred face
sighs. Weary from journeying,
he has arrived at the holy
site. Chimes break silence
on winter night. He turns,
thinks he hears laughter.
Only a stray gray cat,
companion traveler. Out
of his satchel, he pulls
a strip of beef jerky,
an offering to his new friend
who quickly ingests half
a stick, then threads
his body in and out
of the man’s legs. In
moon-provided light,
the man sees a white
scar on the cat’s face,
one ear torn. He sighs.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

I like this one. I am partial to cats. Cats tolerate me. You may have noticed I live in Oregon City.
