Taking Steps

Written for:  Poetic Asides November 2015 Challenge – Day 7
Write a simmer down poem.

In the alleyway, I hear crying
hope it’s a cat, not someone dying.
Didn’t hear whizz of bullets flying.

This neighborhood must start trying
to teach their kids to stop buying
into gang culture where defying
is center stage, and tantalizing
to impoverished children. Scandalizing!
They moved up a notch from vandalizing.

Instead of sitting still and sighing
about how these hoodlums are monopolizing
our neighborhood, we are calmly devising
an action plan–our own uprising.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
