Cabin 9

Written for:  dVerse Poetics – Room With or Without a View
I think it will be kind of fun to reflect on ‘rooms’ or ‘a room’ in poetry. Have you ever entered a room and found that someone you didn’t want to see was there, but now that you were there you knew you had to stay? Do you have a memory of your childhood bedroom or childhood kitchen? Or attic? Or basement? Do you have a ‘room memory’ as an adult? A hotel room? An office? Your grandmother’s living room? A hospital room? What is the room like? Its smell? Who is there in the room? Or is it empty? What emotions does the room bring about? Does anyone speak? Describe a scene in a particular room – real or imagined?  Try to use as many senses as you can. Bring the room and/or experiences within the room alive vividly.

Swish and roar of winter’s
ocean filtered through a large
front window of the cabin.
Logs hissed and crackled,
flames danced in the brick
fireplace. A collection
of old wine bottles graced
the mantel. Rough hewn beams
lined the ceiling. Healing
warmth of fire stained
our faces red. Faint musty
scent of old wood and saltwater
lingered in the air.

Four friends sipped wine,
reclined on worn embroidered
chairs and couch, feel of thick
weave under our fingers.

I can still smell the perfumed
aroma of the rose lotion
my friend gave me to smooth
on my face and hands. Just a
simple cabin on a hill–forever
imprinted on my mind.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
