Annoying Idiom

Written for:  dVerse Poets Pub – Quadrille

To dance with us you do the following, write a poem using exactly 44 words excluding the title (not less, not more). Make sure to include the word grin in your poem.

Folks say, grin
and bear it, or
grin and bare it,
if aiming for laughs.

When laden
with an onerous
situation, if libation
is not an answer,

you will have to bear it,
but why grin? Get through
it; don’t do it. Don’t grin.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

I think because you mentioned “libation,” a “gin” snuck in there on me, as well. Which MADE me grin. 😉 Love this.

  8. Good point, Sara. We have to do things we don’t like to do but there’s a balance between grinning and scowling.

Yes, get through with it. Get up and be counted and even stamp one’s presence with authority. That should do it!
