Body Food

Written for:  The Sunday Whirl, Wordle #249

words:  cell, yearning, silken, light, boundless, fire, grace, join, moment, eggs, skin, any

She yearns to have silken
skin, the light graceful stride
of a woman without jiggling
accoutrements of cellulite.

Her body is becoming a menu.
Cottage cheese thighs that wiggle
like loose eggs, joined by boundless
appearances of blue veins, crossed
like ropes of licorice.

Her face flushes fire-engine red
at odd moments of day and night.
No help in sight. Are there any
articles she has not yet read
about aging, health, and self-esteem?
It is just plain mean-spirited
of magazines to parade countless
perfect women across glossy pages.
Where is the rage?

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

It is mean of magazines to put too many hopes for those desperate beings. But vanity is the underlying factor that sells. A marketing ploy and you’ve nailed it very well Sara!

grrr… yes. The models for face creams are 17 years old… It’s mean in the world of magazines. From 17yr olds to doddering chairlifts and comfy shoes.. There is no in-between, but we, the real women get on with getting old as it happens.
