Getting a Get

Written for:  Poetic Asides #356, “Getting A ______”

In order to get a get, an orthodox
Jewish husband must present
a written divorce document. He does
not need a reason–burned dinner, sinner
in an adulterous affair, bad hair day–
and his wife is sent away. Does he
pay? Oh yes. If he should have
a change of heart, wish to remarry
his ex, there is a hex on his doing so
if she has been married to another
during the time hubby had second thoughts.
Confused? Consult a rabbi.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
