Hospital Horrors

Fireblossom Friday:  “Perchance To Dream”
You can write about someone having a dream, or experiencing a dream-like state. You can write based on something you dreamt yourself. But let me be clear, I am talking about night-time, sleeping-type dreams, not dreams as in dreams of world peace or suchlike.

“To sleep, perchance to dream…” –Hamlet

They giggle, tossing jokes
back and forth like jugglers.
These nurses and doctors
who should be readying
themselves to operate
on me. I sit up in blue-
flowered gown, frowning
with doubt. I keep repeating,
‘my leg is not numb yet.’
They tell me not to worry.
Here I sit, entrenched
on a bench in a corridor
listening to escalating
laughter. I foresee disaster.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

This dream leaves one feeling defenseless – all the more scary for the laughter.

  3. Oh! A nightmare. I’m definitely still afraid of those moments like these where you feel powerless, just waiting for what you know may happen, will happen — and even though I’ve been through surgeries, I’ll never not be nervous about them..(cue the nervous laughter)…Thanks for sharing.
