Trophy King

Written for:  Poets United Midweek Motif~Conquest
As we leave August behind, we leave a month named in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus because it was the time of year in which he conquered Egypt, et al.

Write a new narrative poem on a glorious, inglorious, or mixed conquest.

Augustus of Prima Porta, 1st century

Trophy King

Never knew if he liked them, loved
them, or was indifferent. New trophy
every season. Reason was unclear.
Maybe he harbored a fear of someone
leaving him first. Thirst was unquenchable,
treatment of women reprehensible. Where
is he now, I wonder. Did he ever marry?
How many divorces in course of his life?
He may have children–possibly sons.
I cringe to think what knowledge he might pass
on to them. Then again, he could be dead.
No one has seen him in years. How funny
it would be to find out he has become
someone else’s trophy.

He is alive and well and is as rich as Croesus. His sons are both successful ( in a societal sense) and just like him. How do I know? I used to be married to him:)
