Wonderland Day

Written for:  dVerse Poets – Poetic Tuesdays:  “A Cause For Celebration”  (posted by Walt)
Life can come at you with a heavy hand, and we end up dealing with it the best we can. With this in mind, I have this overwhelming need to celebrate something. Anything! Even if it’s just the fact I wrote another poem, and persuaded you to write one as well. That is cause to celebrate in itself!

Today we celebrate Wonderland,
named by a brainy, talented man.
He offered Alice a chance to explore
She got stymied by a door.
When she got through,
a to-do ensued.
No one looked quite like Alice
Only a Red Queen lives in a palace.
Meeting a strange bunch of creatures
was one of Wonderland’s main features.
Encounters with a rabbit
who was not in the habit
of being on time for afternoon tea.
A deranged hatter, and March hare can be
irritating, as was a Cheshire cat
who was given to vanishing, just like that!
A great place to visit, Alice said,
if you remember not to paint roses red.
Let’s celebrate Wonderland now,
and to Lewis Carroll, a curtsy and bow.

  10. I wrote at length on Bryan’s blog (I think it was) about my own traumatic childhood event related to Alice in Wonderland. Pathetic, huh. That is to say, I haven’t read it since it was read to me at 4. But between the 2 of you, I think I need to change that!
