Written for:  Carpe Diem Tanka Splendor #6, Chestnuts
Chestnuts are very common all over the globe and chestnuts have a kind of deeper meaning that fits the idea of tanka being a love poem, because the chestnut’s meaning is fertility and desire and it is said that through a kind of ritual with chestnuts you can find the love of your life.

a night secret
a worm under the moon
bores in a chestnut

in the twilight
on an open place in the forest
witches dance
the sweet perfume of roasted chestnuts
and entangled bodies

Here is my attempt:

x’s cut on top
shallow pan in hot oven
chestnut aroma
fills the kitchen on Thanksgiving
corners curl back to free meat

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
