Wow!

Murphy

I could not stop looking at those baby animal pictures!
I started thinking about the first time I saw one of my
adopted dogs. Here is her story:

Ten puppies in a pen,
wish I could have all of them.
I spot a barrel-shaped pup,
gold and gray. I pick her up.
A squirming ball of fluff
wriggles against my chest, enough
to make me fall in love with her,
those golden lashes and champagne fur.

Rescued from an old junkyard,
she was seven weeks old–life was hard.
Her black nose had a tiny slit
injured by heavy equipment.
Vet was afraid, how would she breathe?
I knew she’d make it, she would succeed.
My little barrel is now ten,
with a younger brother–her best friend.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

All it takes to fall in love with a pup is to pick one up. I so know the feeling. She must be such a happy girl, and her brother looks pretty contented as well. I loved this poem!

  3. Love it.. I would not be a good dog owner so I avoid falling in love with them… I keep my distance.

I love this poem so much, from beginning to end. Perfect use of rhyme, just perfect! Also that might be the best dog name EVER IN LIFE. ❤
