Promises, Promises

Written for:  Quickly #13

Let one of these be your springboard.

Use the quote itself, or not, as you will.

“I cannot and will not cut my conscience to fit this year’s fashions.”
~Lillian Hellman
to the House Committee on Un-American Activities

I promise not to refer
to myself in third person;
I am confident in my ability
to remember my name. Not
possessing the title,
Authority On Everything, I will
listen, weigh words, and render
my opinion.

I promise not to slander
anyone who is not me
or disagrees. There are
enough bluebirds in
the world to allow me
to refrain from tweeting.
No one cares.  I will be zealous
about not being jealous,
or whiny.  It grates.

In conclusion, I promise
not to promise.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  1. I love this (esp the blue birds and tweeting -ha, clever) I don’t have a twitter acct and don’t plan to get one but on Facebook I have learned to not get into the argument. People are so on-sided and arrogant and just plain ugly. I believe what I believe but am willing to change my mind if the evidence is there.
Crazy times we live in (probably people have always said that)

Oh, man. I love that first line so much. :0)
