Use of Spiral Staircases

Written for:  Quickly #24 – spiral

Horror books and films often feature
spiral staircases, a favorite of creatures.
Inexplicably, their victims run up, screaming.
Stuck upstairs, no hiding, easy seeking.

Elderly woman of great wealth
seated in wheelchair, poor health.
Looming behind her at top of stairs,
her wicked nephew. She is unaware
of his greed; he cannot wait
for inheritance. Pushes her chair,
watches as she spirals to her fate.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  1. Have you been binging again on the movie channel? Those are things of nightmares – esp. the first one and I don’t even have an upstairs.

Yes! There’s just something about that spiral staircase, isn’t there? Cinematic. 😉 Love this.

Always wanted to live in a house with a spiral staircase; now I’m not so sure . . . .
