Written for:  Carpe Diem #1159 Matto, birthplace of Chiyo-Ni

Today we are visiting the birthplace of the most famous female haiku poet ever, Chiyo-Ni (1703-1775).

Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture’s natural beauty (autumn)

‘Chiyo-Ni is most known for her haiku about Morning Glory for example this one, her most famous haiku I think:’

morning glory!
the well bucket-entangled,
I ask for water

(c) Chiyo-Ni

lies within the listener –
a cuckoo’s call

on moor and mountain
nothing stirs
this morn of snow

(c) Chiyo-Ni

Here is my attempt:

russet richness
autumn raises its head
birds hide in leaves

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
