The Annual Animal Parade

Written for:  Quickly:  Funny Thing Happened

Until then…Mardi Gras.

Play it straight or play it kinky.

Invent your own version of the parade. Maybe even make up your own Krewe. What’s your thing? What do you throw to the crowd?
Or would you prefer to be on the receiving end? Talk about the sidewalk. The sounds, or the smells.

Here we come!
Puzzle-necked giraffes, elephants
prancing, hyenas laughing,
pandas bouncing, ponderous
rhinos, and heavy-headed
lions. The Animal Parade
is the only time you will not
be bashful about dressing
up as your favorite animal.
Trot or plod down Main Street,
being careful to look up
as wagonloads of climbing,
hooting monkeys, throw
animals crackers to place
in your hat. Fattest hat
wins a trip, all expenses
paid, to Wonderland–
where animals are
strange, and no one complains
except the oysters
after they’re eaten.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
