Built For Two

Your Challenge: There are far fewer poems with a cycling motif than
there should be.
Let’s fix that!

“Get a bicycle. You will not regret it. If you live”.
~Mark Twain, “Taming the Bicycle”

Oh, for days of yore.
What could be more fun
than a bicycle built
for two? Riding past
tea shoppes, drugstores
with soda fountains,
and statues in the village
square. Not a care.
There they go, suited men
and long-skirted women
holding on to their hats.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  4. My next-door neighbors have a bicycle built for two, and often ride around the neighborhood on balmy summer evenings. It looks like such fun!

This must be a rare sight in cities now, but ever since the sing “Daisy, DaisY” entered my life, I like to think about it:
“It won’t be a stylish marriage,
    I can’t afford a carriage.
But you’ll look sweet, upon the seat,
Of a bicycle built for two.”

Tandems are fearsome cycles where the rider behind puts his utmost faith in the rider in front of him or her. A machine for the foolhardy…I will stick to my own pushbike thank you!

This is fun, Sara. I never rode on a bicycle built for two. But sure did love my two wheeler back in the day.
