Written for Imaginary Gardens With Real Toads – Weekend Mini-Challenge: “Out of Your Own Words” (imagined by Magaly Guerrero)
Grandma loved wearing red nail polish,
fanning out her fingers in admiration.
In her bedroom, silver brushes and combs
adorned her dresser, arrayed on a silver-
edged tray. I loved holding that thick
brush in my hands, pretending I was
a movie star. My grandparents lived
in a working class Brooklyn neighborhood.
No one had money for a night on
the town. Gowns were seen only
on new brides. Grandma and Grandpa
did not need an excuse to dress well.
When they visited, grandma wore a
flowered dress, and blood red lipstick.
Grandpa walked at her side with pride.
His clothes were neatly pressed,
and he always wore a hat. They were
happy. Family was everything.
