Day Light

Written for:  dVerse Poets Pub – Meeting the Bar: Critique and Craft   (Posted by Frank) – The topic today is sleep.
“Sleep can suggest many things: rest, dreams, nightmares, or even death. Some people view sleep as a waste of time. Some view it as a source of inspiration. Even when we are awake, some claim that we are “asleep” and need to “wake up”. Some think there’s nothing but sleep and dreaming.”

If my dreams were dreamy
I’d look forward to sleep,
no mid-night screaming.

Often I wake with clenched jaw,
a headache ensues, and I’m glad
if I’ve forgotten what I saw.

Sleep should be restful–
spring breezes and summer beaus–
not emotions to wrestle

with or loss of way,
frantic to get somewhere?
Why can’t daydreams stay
(the night?)

I don’t usually get nightmares, but I can imagine the headaches and restlessness they must cause. I do get dreams where I am trying to go somewhere but keep getting detoured. They aren’t nightmares, but they are frustrating. I like your last two lines. Daydreams one may have more control over unless anxiety occurs.

  2. Oh, I hate nightmares! I don’t get them too often. I am sorry if you do. Yes we need more daydreams at night.

  3. Good questions indeed. ‘spring breezes and summer beaus’ is a fine line to to say out loud.

  6. I share Frank’s dreams of trying to go somewhere and getting detoured or unable to find my way. Wonder what the dream-merchants would make of those. Yeah … I’m for spring breezes and summer beaus too!

Very true Sara! Sleep is a luxury, that is why!

Oh nightmares are certainly frightening and may even scare one into insomnia! As I age, I find I have lucid dreams many times and can change some things or force myself awake if I can’t change the scary parts.[not always unfortunately; those times I prefer to stay awake]

  9. “Why can’t daydreams stay the night?” is so great. (A dentist can make you a mouthguard to keep you from clenching your jaw. Could help with the headaches but it won’t help with the bad dreams, alas.)
