Stopped Short

Words:  crime, deliver, shine, gasping, feed, injure, see, chime, sing, tilt, argue, begin

A budding career stopped short.
No longer will she deliver
songs to her audience. See,
she was injured, left gasping
for breath on a lone stretch
of road, car tilted on its side.
Fed by love of her fans–melodic
chimes to her ears–what a crime
that she can no longer shine
in the spotlight. Stopped
for a red light, her car
was rammed by a drunk driver.
Arguments on this case take place
on the first of next month. Driver is
a three-time offender
with a suspended license.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

You use the words for a graphic description of what is seen far too often — a person of real value to the world killed or incapacitated as a result of the actions of one on whom air, water, food and space are entirely wasted.
