A Dog’s Thoughts

Written for:  Poets United Midweek Motif~Animals
MISSION OF WORLD ANIMAL DAY
Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals. It’s celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or political ideology.

What would you speak of–wild ones,
domestic ones, or both? Move us, dear poets,
in a new poem with images and insights
pertaining to animal(s).

Noahs_Ark

Noah’s Ark (1846), a painting by Edward Hicks.

Luminous eyes gleam,
a tentativeness, as a dog
assesses a human. Should he
be fearful or friendly? Step
by step he advances. You bend
down to an equal level,
and offer a hand. He sniffs
a whiff of kindness and love.
His tail begins a frantic dance–
whirling, curling in the air.
Anticipation shakes his whole
body. He crouches down, paws
to ground, and licks the hand
he knows will feed him, play
with him, and keep him safe.
His loyalty is absolute.

  1. Yes, that is a dog, for certain – ready to trust, ready to be happy, to love……….I wish they were always met with the respect and kindness displayed in this poem.
