Turning Away

“Bodies, can’t you see what everybody wants from you?”

There are people
who are legally blind,
while others choose
not to see, not to move,
not to offer aid. What if
everyone turned their backs
on cruelty?

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  7. You are so correct – the few that respond to the elderly, the sick, the abused, cruelty…. most of us owe them a big debt. Most of us will be in a place of need someday. The interesting thing is how volunteering opens the world for many, makes the individual giving more vibrant, alive, happy – and yet there is such a need as most don’t volunteer …
