Ode To Silence Breakers

silence breakers

“There was a lot to be discouraged about in 2017, but one positive is the rise of the “Me, Too” movement, revealing how many women have experienced some form of sexual abuse, harassment or assault.

So this is your moment to howl, my friends. Write your poem about any aspect of women’s lives, our voices, our stories, our silencing, and/or our speaking out that you wish. Hear us roar!”

Here’s to an end of the scarlet wall of silence
erected by powerful legends, egos supreme
that now lies crumbled, trampled by pilots
that choked on abuse and swallowed their screams,
convinced their voices would never be heard.
Women’s rights was a dream largely ignored.
Now each one who comes forward empowers
others too timid to speak up before.
Let no one think they are immune to ethics–even those who live in towers.

  1. Sara, how I love this. “Let no one think they are immune to ethics – even those who live in towers.” Perfection. I have watched women trying to rise and be heard since my young womanhood……yes, we have come so far. But, this year, to see a political regime trying to roll womens’ rights back to the 1950’s is more than I can bear. Thankfully, we women are strong. We recognize injustice. And thanks to the brave women now breaking the silence, those in their ivory towers can tremble. We can survive them, we can topple them, and live to see a better day. Time for woman power to rise and heal this suffering planet. Thank you so much for adding your voice to this discussion.

This is the magic which we see unfolding, and sexual exploitation is not confined to women, for many powerful moguls have their own proclivities to be fed. Silence has made people feel helpless.

Wow, Sara, that’s a powerful image, ‘the scarlet wall of silence’ and its crumbled remains. The final line is so true.

Bravo! That wall was/is blood, and it’s coming down. Unfortunately there’s lots and lots of it. But let’s go for the tower first!

  6. I think that the difference is that it have never been silent… much more silenced, which it cannot be again.

  7. Like a wave it will, I hope, wash away the transgressions of the past and lift us to a more balanced future.
