Written for:  Poets United Midweek Motif~Money
It’s Women’s History Month, so feel free to link women’s history and money in your poem if you wish. I think poets of all genders would do marvelous and beautiful things with money.

“There is only one class in the community that thinks more about money than the rich, and that is the poor.” ― Oscar Wilde

Susan B.

She graced the face
of a dollar coin.
On reverse side
a laurel branch
clutched by an eagle.
Unpopular with the public,
production was halted.
Abolitionist and supporter
of women’s right to vote,
she was jailed for voting
illegally; it was not yet
time.  I would have liked to use
this dollar coin, graced with her face.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  1. Wow, I would have, too. What a cool coin. Loved the poem, Sara.

I had one saved and lost it. I think the problem was that people kept them instead of circulating them–but I could be wrong. I enjoy the power of symbolism here, and how it deepens the need of your speaker for this dollar.

Equality for women has still such a long way to come. It is as though men are frightened of the way women may reduce their own power and influence. This fear all comes back to their different roles in procreation. Clearly the woman is the most important member in continuing the bloodline, they are stronger and much more useful to the child than men. So man must crush the woman in all other ways and so many men still practice this.
