“Gathering Wood” by Edward Emerson Simmons

A few spare moments
to gather
my thoughts

Beyond neighbor’s yard
swirl of pink
an elbow of sky

Steady weather
dry and clear
for tomorrow

Church day–
need those kids
up early, washed, and dressed

Best get this bundle
inside. I have used
my few spare moments

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

I especially like that elbow of sky!

They always pass too quickly! Thanks for being part of FBF! 🙂

  3. It’s lovely to see life just… happening.

  4. Jim says:

It’s nice to collect thoughts in stolen time. When I was in the Service I counted my off time as time for me. Actually the Army said that they owned me every moment, on the job or not. Like your spare moments but while I contemplated I also cut my nails on government time. Or the like.

  5. Brendan says:

A very narrow margin for this working life. I think that was the essence of what Simmons was tracing, and you echo those brushstrokes finely here. Good job.

The wedding hardly touches this woman’s life or dreams. A beautiful write.

  7. The few precious moments to gather…. sometimes we just need to be by ourselves.
