Rescue Me!

Write a poem about a dog you loved-and/or still love.

Walter

Walter, our Bassett Hound rescue,
was a charming character–sweet,
endearing–and enduring of two
children next door who dressed
him for Christmas in reindeer
antlers. He rolled his bloodshot
eyes but sat patiently waiting
for the click of cameras
to cease. Walt could displace
more water than he drank. Had
to jump out of his way
after a soulful shake
when spit could stick
anywhere, even a television
screen. His favorite time
was mealtime. He would lay
on the floor, head in his
dish, eating and purring.
I can still feel the velvet
of his droopy ears. Walter,
our Bassett Hound rescue
had only eight years.
I still miss him.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

What a sweetheart. I especially love the purring. He was smart to lie down to eat so his ears didnt get in the way. I subjected Pup to antlers, and he was mortally offended. He posed for photos but with a baleful, embarrassed look.

  2. My cousin growing up had a Bassett named Phoebe Ebaugh. Yes, the ears are like velvet. Phoebe used to step on them when she was a puppy. Thanks for the memory.

This is a nice tribute to Walter. I am sorry that he only got to live eight years. Could you have been misinformed of his age when you adopted him?

Eight years and they would have been too old by then. A pity they don’t last that much more!
