City of Colors

Written for:  Poets United Midweek Motif~City  (posted by Sumana)
“In the eyes of a poet what would a busy city look like? A dream or a nightmare?”

A city stays in your heart,
grabs a seat in your brain,
rains romance and sorrow.
Wherever you grow up, all
faces look familiar, even
if they are strangers.

New York City is a kaleidoscope
of color, buildings, art. Illumined
in evening, city lures you in
like a side-show barker. See
my lights, feel my promise.
Are you game? Under daylight,
cement sidewalks glitter
as gems. Window displays
are arranged for browsing. Your
pulse quickens, electricity charges
the air. Scents from coffee
houses, bakeries, and restaurants
fill your nostrils, grumble your
stomach.

In all the times I have been away
from my city, there was never
a time I didn’t feel its pulse
beating.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

Sara, love your description of New York city, even though I have never been there. And no, Buffalo, New York doesn’t count. Drive-by on a school trip, several decades ago.

Most cities beguile us this way, and we succumb as each one enchants with her charms wooing us like foolish lovers.
