Birthday Picnic

This is one of the three major American picnic holidays.

Think about Picnics.
Ideal, realistic; when, where, with whom.
Be happy.

It was unexpected,
the rejected girl
returning to the land
of wonder, swinging
a basket of sophistication
on this Labor Day
celebration. Excitement
coursed through her
veins, as she awaited
her guests.  The tea service
was of a dainty china, tea
cakes arrayed on a tiered
tray. He will be late,
of course, even though
it is his birthday. I have
gathered a bouquet which
will not offend his twitching
nose. Ah, here they come,
walking through the woods.
He should be here any moment.
Then I will cry, Happy Birthday,
Tea is served!

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
