Double-Dog Dares

Written for:  Poetics Aside #472 – Write a double poem.
“As a former baseball player, I think of hitting doubles. But there are so many other possibilities with doubles, including double entendre, double jeopardy, double trouble, stunt double, and double helix. Also, a doppelganger is considered a person’s double.”

Oh no! A double-
dog dare ya!  A single
dare allows you to straddle
the fence for a time. Could
I dive into that icy river?
Maybe, maybe not. Long
way down. I could drown
or get hypothermia. Can pass
on this dare if I choose.
Escalated to a double-dog
dare ya puts the pressure
on. If everyone starts
diving in, you sort of have
to do it. Either that,
or be branded ‘chicken’.
Hope the stakes do not
jump to a triple-dog dare
ya, the one dare you cannot

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
