Ode on Books

Written for:  Poetic Asides 2019 April PAD Challenge – Day 11
“For today’s prompt, write a dedication poem. This is a poem dedicated to a person, an animal, or an organization. Or hey, objects work too–like a poem to a rock or paper bag. Put the dedication in the title or in a line under the title (“for Mother” or “to the heart-shaped rock between the creek and the tulips”). I dedicate today’s prompt to all of you!”

Praise to you O books–hardcover
or paperback–sitting on shelves,
spines straight, covers multi-
colored–eerie, intriguing, romantic.

Stacked into categories by genre–
mystery, romance, sci-fi, horror,
poetry, and how-to’s. Not concerned
with any accompanying
quotes, just a jacket to condense

your story for me. If you reside
in a library, I must be diligent.
Reading is confined to a time
period. Open you up, late at night,

light over my bed to illuminate
pages, and oh, if I am hooked
at start, I may read many chapters
before we must part.

Praise to you O books, you introduce
me to a myriad of people and cultures.
You are a silent teacher, and I
a willing pupil.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
