Long Time Pal

Ah, doesn’t that feel
good, Samson? My hands
will stroke your face
and mane as long as
you’d like. I remember
riding on your back
for the first time.
I was terrified. An
instant affinity afforded
us a long, loving friend-
ship. You health is failing,
you are ailing, and I am
unable to help, except
to keep stroking you
for as long as I can.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

  3. Yes, keep stroking and loving so he knows the depth of your heart, while you still can. I wrote about a foal who left too soon. Heartbreaking to lose these beautiful beings. But we are blessed to have known them and to have gained their trust.
