Nod to Maya Angelou

Written for:  Poetic Bloomings2 – July 11 – “The Poets I Wished I Was”
“Claim a favored poet and try to write her/him in their style. We all say “I wish I had written that!” Well, now’s your opportunity to write that, in their style, in your own way.”

Three strikes and you’re out
What’s that all about?
I am not a purring pussycat
whose nine lives are expected.
I have been rejected,
came back.
I have been neglected,
came back.
I have heard hurtful lies,
fought through wrenching goodbyes,
had many a cry.  There were times I thought
I was nothing,
but I know better now. I am something.
May be old,
don’t fold,
can still charm,
still disarm.
Eyes open wide
as I stride,
nothing to hide.
You think you know me,
can’t see
I always come back.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
