My Last Day

Written for:  Poetics Aside #489 – “Write a death poem.”

Flawless beach day.  Amorous
lover helps me erect
a sensational turreted
sandcastle. We amble along
shoreline, enthusiastic
as kids over fan-shaped
and nacreous shells. A
plaintive cry of seagulls
echoes as twilight purples
the sky. We dine outdoors,
bottle of chilled white wine
close by. As stars blink-wink
silver, and lunette moon smiles,
we find a secluded spot,
make luscious love
on a blanket. We peak
that mountain together,
after which, I slip
into a slumber from which
I do not wake. I am smiling.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
