Shock
of cold
water waves
on sun-drenched skin,
toes curling in mud
as seaweed and driftwood
sweep by. Seagull’s eyes search for
food, squawking. Children build castles.
How can she wear that bathing suit? Don’t
stare. Look, sun is sinking into water.

About purplepeninportland
I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York.
My goal is to create and share poetry with others
who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve
in you, and feel your sparks as well.
Ha! I have asked that question a few times as I people-watch. But shame on me – seriously – I try and turn it around and say “good for her!”

The ending is excellent. I have looked at people in amazement wondering how they could wear what they do. I laugh at myself and wonder how I could waer what I do!

Thanks, Toni! I am always wondering what people see in the mirror before they leave the house.
