Patti Smith

Written for:  Poetic Asides 2019 PAD November Chapbook Challenge – Day 18
“For today’s prompt, write a music poem. Write about your favorite song, band, performer. Or write about your distaste for music. Just mention a tune in passing, or write a poem that responds to a song.”

First time I stood stock still in amazement–
“Jesus died for somebody’s sins but not mine.”
Fierce voice vibrated to my appraisement.

She shocked her audience at the Bottom Line
A waif writing poetry and song, burst
onto the punk rock scene, at a time

when new sounds were needed, new words of verse.
First punk rock album, was Patti’s “Horses.”
I tried to attend all her concerts.

Last time I saw her was a performance
of reading poems, and singing songs.
Both of us 70, still non-conformists.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
