In The Air . . . For An Instant

Written for:  Sunday Whirl #433

Words:  choke, jump, open, sin, fly, grounds, hunger, story, filling, try, fire, line

Jump as high
off the ground
as you wish,
but just try
to fly. There
is a fine line
between wishing
and accomplishing.
You are not a
bird with pinions.

Imagine prisoners
filling cells
for their sins
or not. How hungry
they must be
for wide space,
and open air.
Recycled air
is stale, pales
faces, dries
throats. Some-
times feels like
choking on fire.
What stories
can they tell?
They can jump
as high off
the ground as
they wish, but
they cannot fly.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
