Written for: Poetic Asides April 2020 PAD Challenge – Day 18
Write a message poem.
This is not a time to think only of “I”.
Pandemic status pleads that you don’t
forget others–the homeless, those whose bellies feel
empty–standing on food lines that
wrap around blocks. Have I
more right to comfort than they? Am
I selfish, going about life slowly
without thinking enough of those dying
in nursing homes and hospitals, but
for want of adequate equipment? I
try to be a caring person, and am
hurting for all.
A golden shovel poem, where all end words are based
on a line from another poet’s poem in order. In this case
I used “Mortal Aria” from Sharon Olds’ book, Arias.
“I don’t feel that I am slowly dying, but I am.”
Are we sleeping with the enemy
Maybe there’s smug bug in our rugs
