Social Acceptance for Teens

Written for:  Poetic Asides April 2020 PAD Challenge – Day 23
Write a “Social (blank)” poem.

Acceptance by their peers is crucial to teens,
to dress, to speak, to look like all the rest.
Of course there’s always a leader to thwart dreams
by picking favorites who must pass her test.

Maybe it’s a dare,
perhaps a fickle choice.
One who’s in favor
is outcast tomorrow.

When school has ended, we go our separate ways,
re-evaluating those friendships can cause a change.
We might keep friends from school, or prefer a break.
Acceptance by their peers is crucial to teens.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
