Awakening to Misdeeds

Written for:  Go Dog Go Cafe – Tuesday Writing Prompt – Today’s prompt: Write anything related to “Even a rose has thorns”

How was this possible, they thought.
It wasn’t a facelift he bought.
Yet year after year, he looked
ever young, while they aged
like the pages of an ancient
book. Only the devil knew
that he had sold his soul
to keep his youth evermore.
One by one his friends
passed on to another shore.
Then, in a cobwebbed closet
he roared. He saw the
oil painting of himself.
Green ogre with pus
running from his eyes,
fingernails the size
of a human hand, and
his face a roadmap
of sins.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
