Weekly Scribblings #24: When All Else Fails
Write poetry or prose where speakers or characters fill in the blank,
“When all else fails, I __________.”
To snap out of a cloud
-gray day of the mind
is a misnomer. If you
are mired in mud,
you cannot just jump
out shining clean.
I try to return
to drawing, frustrated
because my hands will
not create what I see.
Writing lightens
burdens of heart,
as does a brisk walk
to awaken a sluggish
brain or lazy muscles.
A stroll on the beach
sparkles my senses-
that ever present
whoosh of waves.
When all else fails,
I close my eyes
and meditate. There
I find a quiet peace,
a slowing of heartbeats.

Yes. At least there are other ways for us.

To try to live as if the darkness isn’t there, as if it doesn’t affect us will always be a mistake. Best to take a break… and find solace in what keeps us going–ink, dirt, slowing down when needed…

I especially love “If you are mired in mud, you cannot just jump out shining clean.” I personally find there is a process to getting back to better and that I have to try a combination of things in my toolbox to cope.

Nicely done. My favorite part is: ” If you / are mired in mud, / you cannot just jump / out shining clean.” Very good metaphor for depression or even just the “off days” that everyone has occasionally.

It is indeed a blessing to be able to write, walk or meditate if all else fails.

So much to be grateful for. Better than dwelling on the problems in your life.
