Written for: dVerse Poets Pub – Quadrille – How Does Your Garden Grow?

Tenacious cherry tomatoes
held on through
tree-ripping storms. Proud
parsley and potting
pal, Mexican oregano,
were undaunted. Basil
battled odds, but drowned.
Spinach plants laid down
their armor, and surrendered.
Lavender thrived, as did
purple petunias.
Ah, life and death
of a garden.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York.
My goal is to create and share poetry with others
who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve
in you, and feel your sparks as well.
Love this. It evokes both the imagery of life and death in nature, along with the subtext of it occurring to humanity as well. The different struggles that occur, each with either the same or antithetical outcome—that’s very poignant and thoughtful in this piece. Brilliant poem!

The challenges of weather in the world of gardening. I can see this metaphorically, too. Hope you are safe up there, Sara.

This is incredibly potent in its portrayal of death and survival both literally and metaphorically 💝 Let us be tenacious as those cherry tomatoes 🍅🍅

I believe you captured the apparent randomness of nature in this poem. Well done.

i had to laugh… being a crazy everyday gardener i could relate…. yes, this year the lavender kicked butt…. i have a wild oregano that is nothing like the mexican oregano i grew up with… not all that tasty but the bees like it though when it flowers

Poor basil! This is the first year mine is doing well. I think because I am clipping it very often, putting basil in the freezer.

I have a bit in the freezer, and made Pesto once. I should have acted more quickly when it seemed to be doing well.

Gardens are so unpredictable. We had cucumbers last year that were out of control but this year….nothing, unless you count one tiny cucumber with teeth marks from …um…something. I like the way you personified each plant throughout your poem.

Thanks, Mish. I had ‘out of control’ cucumbers one summer, and then they disappeared.
