Our World

Written for: The Sunday Whirl, Wordle Extra

Words: control, lift, shooter, face, school, date, attack
        see, screen suck, second, worry

For a second
I was able
to see the shooter's
face–a vacant
screen, a blank
slate. His movements
were jerky, out
of control, holding
his weapon lifted
high in the air
until attack
began. Students
ran. He chose
a date that no one
could mistake, that
of September 11th.
My role of teacher
has changed in these
strange, worrying
times. Pandemics,
shootings, stabbings,
and irresponsible
parents. It all
sucks.

About purplepeninportland

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.
