Dog Reactions to Cold Weather

Written for: dVerse Poets Pub - Quadrille #144

"Hello, dVerse Poets! It’s Merril, writing from southern New Jersey, where we’ve been experiencing colder winter weather than we’ve had in a few years. It’s fitting then, that today’s quadrille prompt word is shiver."

Shivering begins
before he goes
for his walk.
Murphy is older
and thinner. I put
his jacket–latest
in camo–on,
closing it securely.
His sister, Marion,
loves the cold
even at fifteen.
She stands on deck
sniffs the air, and gazes
at stars.

I am a freelance poet, born and bred in Brooklyn, New York. I live with my husband, John, and two charming rescue dogs–Marion Miller and Murphy. We spent eight lovely years in Portland, OR, but are now back in New York. My goal is to create and share poetry with others who write, or simply enjoy reading poetry. I hope to touch a nerve in you, and feel your sparks as well.

Just like children, and their differences. Love this poem. Makes me think of all my dogs now gone and at rest.

Nice that Murphy has a warm jacket for the cold weather. It is harder for an older dog to keep warm…I guess just like people. I like the ending with Marion gazing at the stars.
