Darkness Fears Light

“Childhood fears—it’s likely you might have had one or two of them. For today’s prompt I’m going to ask you to revisit them, but with a twist. I want you to write about a situation that would scare whatever it was you were scared of.” 

His pitch was easy–
look at me. Oh right,
you can’t, I am darkness.
I prickle hairs on
your neck. Sometimes
you scream.

Wait! Don’t do that.
Your flashlight opens
pockets in me. Renders
me shadowy, and my
opaqueness is threatened.
Put that candle down!
